Dog Boxing31 Oktober Raging Bullmastive (Boxer Dog) ScriptBoxer Dog/Raging Bullmastive by Chris Parr and William Charles Opening Credits SCENE 1 - INT. BOXING RING - NIGHT The screen is pitch black, nothing in sight. A spot light is switched on lighting up the centre of the arena revealing a boxing REFEREE stood in the middle of the ring. A microphone is lowered from the sky on a wire again central in the light. The referee places his left hand on the microphone and begins his announcement. REFEREE Ladieeees and Gentlemeeen, welcome to tonight's main event, introducing the bluuue corner... REFEREE points to the right of the screen. REFEREE Boris 'The Raging Bullmastive' Peterson. House lights flood over BORIS dressed in a glamourous robe. He pulls back the hood revealing a top hat and a monicle and proudly looks up superior to all who worship him. Several photographers from the audience begin to take his picture. REFEREE And in the red corner... A small framed WHIPPET dressed in old-fahioned, worn-out attire jumps up and down on his toes ready for the fight in the darkened corner. One small spot light shines down on him. REFEREE WHIPPET'S NAME WHIPPET turns to face the crowd and raise his arms expecting to be praised only to be greeted by a "cough" and one photography flash.
SCENE 2 - INT. BOXING ARENA - NIGHT 'Round 1' is written on a well-used rectangluar sign filling the screen. The camera pans down to reveal the young woman in a revealing bikini holding up the sign. WHIPPET and COACH are shown in their corner of the ring preparing for the first round. COACH [subtitled] Tha wants t'gerin cluers... WHIPPET [subtitled] Ar...Reight... WHIPPET is stretching his neck and leaning over to look over COACH's shoulder at the bikini-clad woman. COACH [subtitled] ...'n' put wun on 'is chin, reight? WHIPPET [subtitled] Ar...Reight "DING!" WHIPPET walks to the centre of the ring yet he can't help but notice the bikin-clad woman walking by at the side of the ring. His head follows her movement across screen while his body continues to walk forwards. A large boxing glove enters the shot knocking WHIPPET to the ground. WHIPPET is dazed on the canvas as two little bluebirds fly around his head. The birds simulataneously realise he needs assistance, grab an ear each, and begin to pull him up to his feet. Through WHIPPET's blurred vision we see BORIS executing another deadly punch. WHIPPET flys back onto the ropes behind him which (like elastic) push him back into his opponents readily positioned fist. WHIPPET shatters into pieces as if made of glass. A janitor enters and sweeps him up with a broom. "DING DING!" FADE TO BLACK SCENE 3 - INT. BOXING ARENA - NIGHT WHIPPET is back (in one piece) at his corner with COACH. COACH [subtitled] Well, tha duin better than t'last feight. Ars abart this rarnd thi as a yorksher puddin, COACH whips out a plate of Yorkshire pudding drowned in gravy. COACH [subtitled] mi muther's secret recepie, non o' that Aunty Bisto's shite. "DING!" The bell sounds for round two to begin. COACH [subtitles] Gu on cock, knock 'is block off. WHIPPET walks towards the camera and leaves the screen while COACH watches. COACH reacts to the sounds we here off camera. COACH [subtitled] Ooh..Ah...Eek "DING DING!" The bell sounds to end the round. WHIPPET limps back to his seat in the corner bruised and battered. COACH [subtitled] Well, that dint quite work C/U of COACH. COACH [subtitled] Av gora new plan, this'll definately win it for thi "DING!" COACH [subtitled] Oh well, mebi next rarnd, snot my funeral. C/U of WHIPPET. WHIPPET [subtitled] Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... C/U of WHIPPET's boxing gloves swinging punches at thin air. The camera zooms out to reveal BORIS smugly keeping WHIPPET at arms length. BORIS then pulls a sheet of paper from behind his back/out of his shorts. COACH brings is hands to his head in anticipation fear. COACH [subtitled] Or Nowe, it's t'poem technique! Back to previous shot of BORIS and WHIPPET BORIS I'll knock you out before round seven, I hope you booked your place in Heaven. BORIS puts away the sheet of paper and lands an uppercut on WHIPPET sending him upwards offscreen. A house light waits for WHIPPET's arrival and electrocutes him when he appears onscreen. WHIPPET turns to ashes and falls back down to the ring into a pile. Janitor returns to sweep up his remains. FADE TO BLACK
SCENE 4 - INT. BOXING ARENA - NIGHT WHIPPET and COACH are back in the red corner. WHIPPET sat on an old wooden stool. COACH standing on the ropes beside him. COACH [subtitled] Keep this up, av put a bet on t'other bloke. "DING!" The bell sounds for round three. Cut to WHIPPET in his modern/old fashioned boxing stance. BORIS's glove comes into shot knocking WHIPPET to his knees. BORIS then grabs WHIPPET in a headlock and bites his ear with his razor sharp fangs. COACH [subtitled] Or nowe, 'is usin Mike Tyson tactics. REFEREE's hands appear between BORIS and WHIPPET and force them apart. REFEREE That's foul play pal, ONE point deducted! BORIS punches REFEREE just as he finishes his sentence. BORIS then reaches into his shorts/behind his back and pulls out a spanner. WHIPPET's eyes follow the spanner as BORIS pulls his hand back ready to strike. BORIS then whacks WHIPPET round the face with the spanner, two of WHIPPET's teeth fly out of his mouth offscreen. We cut to a shot of the bell and the two teeth hit it making the "DING DING!" sound that brings the round to a hault. The bell ringer looks confused as he hasn't ended the round himself.
SCENE 5 - INT. BOXING ARENA - NIGHT FADE FROM BLACK We're back with WHIPPET and COACH at the red corner. COACH [subtitled] Av gora plan, listen carefully...(whisper)... FADE TO NEXT SHOT Both boxers slowly walk towards the centre of the ring. WHIPPET pulls back his arm looking as if he's about to throw a punch yet he runs to the left of BORIS. BORIS chases WHIPPET then decides otherwise. WHIPPET looks behind him to see that BORIS is no longer following him only for BORIS to appear infront of him instead. COACH covers his eyes. Multicoloured stars appear from the centre of the now pitch black screen breaking the borders of Widescreen as they leave the shot. SCENE 6 - INT. BOXING ARENA - NIGHT We are back at the red corner with WHIPPET and COACH however this time COACH is not happy. WHIPPET looks tired, battered and bruised while COACH jumps up and down and waves his arms around in anger. COACH [subtitled] BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! WHIPPET's eye begins to twitch, his fist begins to tremble, fire blazes behind him as he lifts his head. COACH [subtitled] Are THY even lisnin t'me? WHIPPET punches COACH into the sky. COACH rotates with his arms and legs spread as he dissapears offscreen. BORIS and his COACH stare upwards in disbelieve. BORIS Did he just punch his own coach? WHIPPET furiously takes off his flat cap and throws it to the floor. "DING!" The bell sounds to start round five. WHIPPET runs towards BORIS. BORIS takes his stance and swings a punch, WHIPPET dodges the attempt and uppercuts BORIS into the air. BORRIS smashes through the roof of the stadium, the two bluebirds from the first scene are flying around his head, as he begins to fall back down to the arena the birds try and pull him to safety but are unable to and so fly away. BORIS falls back into the arena and smashes through the ring canvas. WHIPPET happily stands with his hands on his hips and looks towards COACH. COACH is sat in a wheelchair and bandaged up but nevertheless gives WHIPPET the thumbs up showing there's no hard feelings between the pair. REFEREE (who has smashed glasses from his earlier encounter with BORIS) grabs the arm of WHIPPET and pulls it into the air. REFEREE Tonight's WINNEEER!!! WHIPPET! A steady zoom out of a birds-eye-view of the scene reveals BORIS's body-shaped hole in the ring canvas. The camera slowly rotates away to a pitch black background where the words THE END fade in. FADE TO BLACK Negotiated ProposalName: Christopher Parr (10120824) and Will Charles (10125861) Date: 06/10/05 Working Title: Boxer Dog Submission No. 2
In a dog eat dog world, there can only rise one winner!
Premise Two dogs box eachother to see whos the best, but when Boris is beaten, he just doesn't know when to give up. Outline The premise of this short cartoon is simple, yet the underlying subtext represents something a little more complex. Within this project, I would like to make a comment on social stereotypes and the class system of Great Britain.
The appearance and traits of the two boxers gives the impression that they are completely different yet they find that they are equally matched. One is a Yorkshire whippet complete with old fashioned attire and worn out flat cap, the other a pampered posh boy wearing a top hat and monicle.
By the end of the cartoon both characters either give up and walk off into the sunset or knock each other out. This will comment on what we believe Great Britain to be, a nation of varied and interesting people with completely different yet similar traits. Everyone is equal whatever your background.
Treatment A narrative piece reminiscent of the ‘Golden Age’ cinema cartoons of the 1940s and 1950s. The animation will be 2D hand drawn. These images will then be scanned into the computer, redrawn and coloured using Adobe Illustrator. Each scene will be fitted together using Adobe After Effects and put together in Premier Pro. The visual style will be referential of the Chuck Jones cartoons of the decades mentioned previously and the UPA style. Flat, bold, graphic effect backgrounds with traditional squash and stretch characters placed on top. The piece will be constructed using cinematic shots, with fast paced editing, using After Effects to enhance the visuals. To add to this cinematic effect the film will be presented in Widescreen format. The setting will be in a boxing ring. The working class character will be a male, Barnsley accented whippet (representing one of the stereotypes of the county). He will have likeable qualities, posing as the everyman hero who has many weaknesses. Physically he will be a scrawny, floppy eared, bag of bones. He will look out of date, entering the picture in a flat cap and old coat revealing old style, worn out boxing gloves, shorts and boots. The upper class opponent will be much larger in build, muscular and trim. He will look like the perfect modern day boxer wearing modern day attire and advertisements galore. Both characters will be animated to represent their character. The sound will be recorded onto Minidisc and will give the piece a further comical premise in the way that unfamiliar sounds are used in the Looney Tunes films of the ‘Golden Era’ (see Research). Music will be provided by Stylus, a rock band from Barnsley who play songs of different styles. Research Animated Texts: Looney Tunes (Warner Brothers) The main influence of my idea was initially the Looney Tunes cartoons of the 1940s and 1950s. These cartoons, along with MGM’s Tom and Jerry, focus on situations in which there are many opportunities for slapstick comedy. Each character is very different and likeable in their own way. Script gags are also effective in these pieces and the jokes are still as funny today as they were sixty years ago. Each director had their own distinctive style, yet it is Chuck Jones who I admire the most, especially in the way that he uses flat, simplified shapes to construct backgrounds in a very visually appealing way, as stated before this is the way in which I would like to design the settings for my film. Other components are the use of sound and music which I will take into account when selecting and recording my own. The fact that I am focusing my dissertation on Chuck Jones, and his involvement with Tom and Jerry cartoons, will aid my knowledge and research on this subject.
Raging Bull (Martin Scorsese, 1980) Recently voted the greatest film of the 1980’s by Empire readers (issue 196), this film is amongst my favourites of all time. As the film is about a boxer and contains several boxing scenes, this will aid my work. The cinematography throughout is fantastic and the fight scenes are very powerful and beautifully edited together from each shot to the next. Although my film will have a comical slant, I would like the finished piece to look as cinematic as possible, using interesting (imaginary) camera angles to aid the action and comical timing. A referential joke/sequence may be added as homage to the film. Other films which I may reference from will be Cinderella Man (Ron Howard, 2005), Million Dollar Baby (Clint Eastwood, 2004), and Snatch (Guy Ritchie, 2000).
The Simpsons – The Homer They Fall (Mark Kirkland, 1996) The Simpsons as a whole may influence some of the jokes and comical timing present in my final animation however, I have chosen to focus on this particular episode as it is the one in which Homer (the father of the Simpson family) takes up a boxing career. Sin City (Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez, 2005) There are specific scenes from this film adaptation that I would like to draw upon. These are at the beginning and end stages of the film. The first is the brief scene in which The Man (played by Josh Hartnett) hugs The Customer (Marley Shelton’s character) before assassinating her. The other, at the very end of the film, is the suicide of Hartigan, taking his own life to protect the woman he loves. In both these scenes the whole image is pure black and white, the characters as silhouettes in white contrasting the black backgrounds for just that one shot in the sequence. I will use this type of image as a freeze frame for punch connections during the first part of my animation, the title sequence. The inbetween sections will be in full animation and in colour yet as a punch connects to the face of our hero the shot will pause as a white on black silhouette.
Graphic Styles: Mean Streets DVD Cover
The flat street silhouette and use of just three colours appeals to me in this image. This is most likely to influence the design of the backgrounds and simplify the large audiences watching the fight. This method is often used in pictures of similar content such as Bunny Hugged (Jones, 1951) mentioned previously.
PERMANENT designed by Design Is Kinky Yuck – Teamchman – France I love the flat, graphically-based imagery presented in this picture. It resembles styles referred to previously yet has its own uniqueness. The use of colour (such as the red sky) and the image construction throughout the image give it an appealing quality of which I would like in the imagery of my final film.
Nexus Productions Nexus produce an array of beautifully animated pieces each with their own distinctive style. The Catch Me If You Can (Steven Spielberg, 2002) title sequence shows a good use of typography within the frame and different ways in which they can interact with the animation. I will consider this when designing my own credit sequences. Renegade Cartoons www.renegadecartoons.com
The website’s menu pages are alone enough to influence my work. They are reminiscent of the UPA style of many years ago however the animation reminds my of the modern Cartoon Network type cartoons such as Dexter’s Laboratory (1996 onwards).

Future Employment At the moment, I am unsure of the nature of business I would like to enter. I love film and would possibly like to work within film industry. Ultimately I would like to create my own films, whether it be independently or as part of a company. Skills/support
Contingency plan Music – My father is a good guitar and keyboard player and could fill in here. My girlfriend’s sister plays in the band, Harpoon Larson, who may also be able to help if problems occur. Buddy System – If the work produced for me was not to my requirements I would have to edit them myself accordingly. A false deadline will be produced to finish each stage of production, with at least two weeks to spare beyond the last false deadline to harness any problems which may have set me back.
